About the department
The Department of Chemistry came into existence since the inception of R. P. D. College in the year 1945 at Sawantwadi, later moved to Belgaum. Initially the department started with few students which grow over the time gradually, opting Chemistry as their major subject.
However, due to increased demand for its quality education, the College was fragmented into R. P. D. Arts College and Govindram Seksaria Science College in 1966. Prof. M. K. Bhandare was the first Head of the department. Due to new educational policy in 1991 Chemistry subject was transformed from major/minor subject to an optional subject. In the year 2020 and 2021, Choice Base Credit System (CBCS) and National Education Policy (NEP) were implemented respectively. Presently state education policy (SEP) is being followed. Chemistry is one of the largest departments in the college. There are six faculty members working in the department. The department is presently headed by Mr. R. T. Katamble.
The faculty also completed one DST major and four UGC minor projects. The details of the research are covered in the research centre section. The department is equipped with following instruments facilities:

Scope of the subject
Chemistry, often called the central science, is an unseen designer of our cosmos; it is behind everything from the air we breathe to the medicine we use for healing, from the food we eat to the technology that makes our day-to-day lives easier. Many innovations stem from this fundamental science, which enables medicinal progress while developing green energy technologies and nanotechnology systems and also, protecting nature.
Students, who wish to follow the captivating sciences, should consider pursuing a B.Sc. with Chemistry. The three-year undergraduate degree focuses on organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry to teach students research competencies aligned with laboratory work and industrial practice. Chemistry plays a fundamental role in advancing all forms of innovation by performing fuel development, plastic engineering and biochemical reaction interpretation.
Providing theoretical expertise and practical problem-solving skills to students, the B.Sc. Chemistry program prepares the students to effectively contribute value to industries such as healthcare, environmental sciences, food technology, and many others.

Subject combinations:
Chemistry is one of the optional subject can be studied along with any other two subjects from physics, mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Geology and Computer science. Total there are seven different combinations available for students.
