DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY
The Department of Geology was established in 1966 by Prof. S. S. Navani and has since played a significant role in producing competent geologists who have made notable contributions to the field at national and international levels.
Over the years, the department has grown steadily and currently has seven staff members. The department has been enriched by the services of eminent professors including Prof. S. S. Navani, Dr. D. I. Deendar, Dr. V. H. Uttangi, Prof. S. V. Pauskar, Prof. H. G. Patil, Prof. R. N. Kulkarni, Prof. A. K. Mense, and Dr. P. T. Hanamgond, all of whom are now retired. Prof. A. K. Mense also served as the Principal of the institution.
At present, the department is actively functioning under the guidance of Mr. Suraj Mense (Head of the Department), along with Dr. Raju Sukhaye and Mrs. Priyanka Shinde, who are dedicated to imparting quality geological education and training to students.
The department has successfully completed four major and one minor research projects sponsored by UGC, DST, and MoES, under the guidance of Dr. P. T. Hanamgond. The faculty possesses expertise in Sedimentology (especially coastal research), Geological Mapping, Hydrology, Geophysical Exploration, and Remote Sensing.
Objective of Department
The Department of Geology aims to:
- Develop in students a strong concern for the sustainable utilization of natural resources such as rocks, minerals, water, and energy resources.
- Impart fundamental geological knowledge and prepare students to become competent and responsible geoscientists.
- Inculcate love for Mother Earth and a sense of responsibility towards environmental conservation.
- Create awareness about the Earth’s environment, critical environmental issues, and the need for sustainable development.
- Develop logical thinking, scientific imagination, and emphasize the importance of field data collection, data analysis, synthesis, and drawing scientific conclusions.

Facilities in the Department
The Department of Geology is well-equipped to support undergraduate teaching, practical training, and research activities:
- Well-established laboratories for Geochemistry and Petrology catering to B.Sc. Geology students.
- ICT-enabled classrooms to enhance teaching–learning processes.
- A unique and well-maintained Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Geology Museum, housing over 2000 specimens of minerals, rocks, and fossils, fulfilling the academic requirements of undergraduate studies. Most specimens have been collected by students and faculty during geological study tours across India.
- Facilities and instruments for the estimation of basic soil parameters.
- Surveying equipment including Auto Level and Dumpy Level.
- Resistivity Meter for hydrological and groundwater exploration studies.
- A dedicated Sedimentology Laboratory, developed by Dr. P. T. Hanamgond, equipped with facilities for sieve analysis, surveying, computing, and beach morphological and sedimentological research.
- Remote Sensing facilities, including ERDAS Imagine software and GPS equipment, integrated into laboratory activities.
- The department actively conducts online outreach programmes in Remote Sensing, GIS, and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun.
